An Phat Holdings sets sights on North America

By entering into co-operation with US partners Ford Motors, US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), and The Asia Group, An Phat Holdings expects to accelerate its expansion to the North America market.

On March 3, An Phat Holdings held a working session with Ford Motors, Samsung, DFC, and The Asia Group to discuss co-operation strategies. Especially, it discussed with The Asia Group about developing biodegradable products in the North America market.

The US is considered one of the key markets of the group, which accounts for 10 per cent of the revenue of its packaging segment. In early 2019, An Phat Bioplastics, a member company of An Phat Holdings, announced plans to invest in the construction of an environmentally friendly bag manufacturing factory in the United States in order to meet the increasing demand for this kind of product in the next five years.

At present, the group is one of the few manufacturers who hold technologies and copyrights in this segment. Furthermore, the US government’s incentives for environmentally friendly products are head and shoulders above other countries, which will set the group up for success in the North America market, especially the US.

Pham Anh Duong, chairman of An Phat Holdings, said, “The group established a co-operative relationship with Samsung and has the same manufacturing area as Ford (the manufacturing facilities of both groups are located in Hai Duong province). We expect that the co-operation will continue outside Vietnam.”

In recent years, the group has increased investment in the supporting industry, high-tech sectors, while simultaneously increasing the localisation ratio of its products. It is currently a vendor of Samsung and provides components for automobiles and motorcycles.

In Hai Duong, An Phat Holdings is a leader in the project to develop local supporting industries implemented by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Hai Duong People’s Committee, and Samsung Vietnam.

In addition, the group is a leading industrial real estate developer in Hai Duong. Accordingly, An Phat Complex is not only a production base but also a manufacturing facility for large foreign groups. After two years in operation, the occupancy rate reached 65 per cent and is expected to reach 100 per cent by the end of this year.

Furthermore, the group plans to invest in another industrial zone in Hai Duong named An Binh-Quoc Tuan. The construction of the first phase will be implemented on an area of 180 hectares and is expected to finish by the end of the year.

The group develops green, high-tech industrial parks that offer full utilities to lure in foreign investors, including the wave of US investors relocating to Hai Duong.

Chairman AAA Mr. Pham Anh Duong: “Business performance efficiency and financial health are the first priority from the year 2020”

“The first priority of AAA in the coming year are increasing the company’s marginal profit and improving the financial health, for the purpose of delivering the most beneficial outcome to its stakeholders”, according to Mr. Pham Anh Duong, Chairman of An Phat Bioplastics (AAA)

– Mr. Pham Anh Duong, as I knew that you have just been on a business trip to USA to expand investment in this market in accordance with the new announced business strategy of AAA, could you please share something about this trip?

In early 2019, we officially announced the investment plan into USA market, providing hi-tech and environmentally friendly products.

According to statistics, USA consumes the largest amount of plastic products globally, accounting for 20% of the world in total, bigger than the total amount of Europe, as well as Japan. Besides, USA also consumes some products like knifes – spoons – forks with great amount, around 600 mil USD/year, equivalent to 60% of the world’s total demand. With such a potential market, but AAA has just exported about 10% of its products to USA. We, therefore, see that this market is really attractive.

The world in general, USA in particular, will gradually transit to the use of compostable products within the next five years. In the meantime, AAA is globally one of the few enterprises which owns high technology and patent for this line of products. Furthermore, USA government has the preferential policies for environmentally friendly products, which are better than other countries. That is the reason why we greatly want to focus on this market.

Mr Pham Anh Duong – Chairman of An Phat Bioplastics

As the importance of making investment in USA market, I was assigned by the Chairman of AAA, the responsibility to directly manage and operate the company’s business activities into USA market.

– Sir, you are the Chairman of both AAA and APH, please tell us the difference between these position?

Beside AAA’s traditional plastic bag products, An Phat Holdings is the primary business unit carrying out Research and Development activities, developing new projects and products.

On the one hand, as the Chairman of APH, I have to concentrate on the corporation’s expansion projects such as compostable material projects, projects for supporting industries, etc.

On the other hand, as the Chairman of AAA, I keep focusing on the development of plastic bag products. Although these two BoDs have the shared members, An Phat Holdings does not produce internal revenues with AAA. So the two companies have relatively independent business activities.

I make sure that whatever position I hold, I will always make great effort to guarantee the benefits of the stakeholders.

– Mentioning AAA in particular, how do you evaluate the company’s business performance results in the year 2019?

In 2019, the revenue reaches over 9,300 billion VND, and the profit before Tax is estimated 600 billion VND, doubled in comparison with the year 2018.

In 2019, we focused on expanding our market to maximize the factories’ capacity, along with exploiting maximally An Phat Complex to attract new investment. Under the pressure of quick growth in 2019, finance, debt management and cash flows did not meet the requirements of BoD.

– So, you and AAA will have big plans for the year 2020?

Our first priority in the coming year are increasing the company’s marginal profit and improving the financial health, for the purpose of delivering the most beneficial outcome to its stakeholders. To do this, we do not focus on increasing the revenues, but primarily put all efforts to bring out the most beneficial sources.

Regarding business activities, AAA will enhance the productivities, as well as changing the transiting structures of the products and markets. We will concentrate on the products with higher marginal profits such as compostable products and expand our priced-competitive market to Japan and USA.

With regards to trading field: We will reduce the trading size, focusing on the customers with good financial health, as well as the suppliers with competitive prices. AAA will try to increase the marginal profit amount of this sector by 2% in the year 2020.

About Industrial Zone industry, we will try to hand over and reach the leasing rate of 100% at An Phat Complex in the year 2020.

In general, we plan to increase revenue and profit by over 10% in 2020, in which the production and business growth is over 20%.

Especially, besides the objective of revenue – profit, we set the purpose of improving the cash flows and reducing debt from 2020.

An Phat Holdings: 2019 Year-end meeting & 2020 strategy

On 10 Jan 2019, An Phat Holdings just held the Year-end meeting to summarize 2019 performances and set up the production & business strategy in 2020 at An Phat Bioplastics plant (Hai Duong)

This is one of the annual activities of An Phat Holdings to evaluate the operation results, production and business performance in 2019 and set out the goals for 2020. The event is also an opportunity to honor and reward excellent subsidiaries and employees in the past year.

Presence at the meeting are Chairman Pham Anh Duong; Deputy Chairman Nguyen Le Trung, Pham Hoang Viet; CEO Dinh Xuan Cuong together with other top managements and employees from Group and Subsidiaries.

In 2019, An Phat Holdings reached many achievements and successes in supporting industry, environment-friendly products and positive turnover.

Especially, An Phat Holdings has gained great milestones in investing and trading compostable products by taking business successfully in Vietnam and global market, getting many patents, etc.

About the 2020 strategy, in terms of production, all subsidiaries must take full control of technology, run at full capacity and optimize production costs.

In terms of business goals, An Phat Holdings will also restructure our market structure and product mix, enhance brand recognition and expand markets. In addition, financial stability, cost efficiency, management system optimization are also the key targets of next year. The Group will strive for 13% revenue growth and 38% profit growth in 2020.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of An Phat Holdings Pham Anh Duong emphasized: “In 2020, the Group will focus on expanding production activities and improving the operation efficiency of member companies rather than on sales growth”.

AAA General Director: An Phat Holdings’ purchase of all warrants are reasonable

In Vietnam, the plastic industry is forecasted to grow at 6.5% in the period of 2019-2024 with 4 areas: packaging, household appliances, construction and engineering.

Considering the growth potential of An Phat Bioplastics JSC , many securities companies believed that the current market price has not fully reflected its value, especially as comparing with industry peers.

Among a few plastic industry players listed on HOSE , An Phat BioPlastic JSC (HoSE: AAA) is considered as an “asset” of interest to investors. The profit of the company grew at CAGR of 21% for the past 5 years and is expected to increase by an average of 10-15% in the next 5 years. Thus research analysts believed that the current market price has not fully reflected its growth potential, especially as comparing with industry peers.

Recently, Mr. Nguyen Le Trung, CEO of An Phat Bioplastics JSC shared about the business results in 2019 and its activities in recent years.

– At this time, many investors are concerned about the business results of 2019 and the 2020 plan of An Phat Bioplastics JSC. What do you think regarding the performance of the company last year?

– Mr. Nguyen Le Trung: In the third quarter, the business results of An Phat Bioplastics JSC grew strongly compared to the same period last year. Specifically, net revenue reached VND 2,364 billion, up 8%, profit before tax reached VND 86 billion, up 49% on a yearly basis.

For 9 months, An Phat Bioplastics JSC reached VND 7,406 billion of revenue and VND 520 billion of profit before tax, equivalent to an increase of 28% and 174% over the same period last year. Due to the contribution of the industrial real estate segment and the manufacturing segment, the company had a pretax profit that doubled compared with the same period a year earlier. Of which, profit from core activities contributed 50 % of profit before tax, representing an increase of 35% over the same period in 2018.

Thus by the end third quater, we have achieved 85% of the annual profit plan and are likely to complete the business plan for 2019. This positive result was fueled by the change of market structure and product mix.

Currently we are working on 2020 plan, expecting core profits to grow at least 20% compared to 2018’s. In early January 2020 we will announce our business plan.

Mr Nguyen Le Trung, General Director of An Phat Bioplastics

– What do you think about the price of AAA shares in the past year? AAA share price has not gone up even though the company’s business results are very positive.

– Mr. Nguyen Le Trung: 2019 is a successful year for the Board of Management of An Phat Bioplastics JSC as the profitability maintains strong growth, in which core business activities grew by over 40%. However, as a member of the Board of Directors, I find it unsuccessful when the market value of the company does not reflect the growth potential.

– Is that the reason for An Phat Holdings’ purchase of all the warrants of An Phat Bioplastics?

– Mr. Nguyen Le Trung: With the current profit as well as expected next year profit of An Phat Bioplastics JSC , P/E is less than 5x at the conversion price as well as the market price. Thus we see the purchase of all warrants issued by AAA in order to increase benefit to An Phat Holdings are obviously reasonable at this time. Considering a dividend of 15% of par value (or a dividend yield of over 10% pa) and return on investment of 20% (E/P = 20%), it is a profitable investment and creates value for An Phat Holdings.

Considering stable operation of factories, an increase of over 10% year on year in 2019 sales volumes, and the company’s plan to promote contribution from promising markets including the US and Japan, An Phat Bioplastics JSC will maintain optimal production level as well as reduce its dependence on EU market, facilitating sustainable growth in coming time.

Remarkably, thanks to the Group’s initiative in producing raw materials which aims towards developing a circulating economy model, member companies including An Phat Bioplastics JSC will gain great support and create further synergy fueling future growth.

– The Board of Directors has recently decided to stop the ESOP 2019. Could you tell us the reason?

– Mr. Nguyen Le Trung: We cancelled the ESOP in 2019. In the future, we will propose another more suitable program, such as stock option at a price higher than the book value of the company. Employees only exercise the right to buy when the stock price goes up and that will benefit the company’s shareholders. We think that the policy will be more in line with with shareholders’ interests than ESOP with purchase price at par value.

– What do you think about the prospect of An Phat Bioplastics JSC in the next 3-5 years?

– Mr. Nguyen Le Trung: Catching up the green consumption trend, An Phat Bioplastics JSC has invested to develop compostable products. Currently, our compostable bags account for approximately 10% of the product structure and are expected to increase sharply in the near future when An Phat Holdings’ PBAT production comes into operation. In Vietnam market, many big names like Highlands Coffee, The Coffee House, Vinpearl … have used our biodegradable bags and straws under AnEco brand. In the foreign markets, our top 20 major customers all indicated an increase in total biodegradable products in the near future.

The PBAT production will reduce AAA’s manufacturing costs by 30% compared to the current costs. In addition, An Phat Bioplastics JSC will be more independent in sourcing raw materials, improving inventory turnover and gross profit margin.

In the coming time, we will focus on increasing the proportion of compostable products in the output structure, improving the profit margin and prepare the market. An Phat Holdings’ investment in bioplastics manufacturer based in South Korea will help us secure raw materials at competitive price in the next 2 years before the Group will put the 20,000 ton PBAT factory into operation.

According to our projection, once the compostable packaging factory of An Phat Bioplastics JSC reaches 50% of utilization rate, the net profit can double.
